FactoidBeethoven was 54 when this was first performed in 1824 and by that time entirely deaf. At the end of the first performance Beethoven couldn't hear the rapturous applause behind him and thought the work had been a flop. He was turned to face the audience by the Contralto Caroline Unger, so he could witness the cheers and a prolonged standing ovation. He died three years' later.
